Experience the Joy of Growing Roses

Helping you to grow great roses!

EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF GROWING ROSES!
Picture
Interesting & informative programs and events!
The Manhattan Rose Society holds meetings and events featuring informative programs with world renowned Rose Experts, Garden Tours, Dinners and more!  Our meetings with speakers will continue to be virtual via GoToMeeting for the foreseeable future.  Before the pandemic our Annual Dinner meeting was held at a fine restaurant in Manhattan. We also held private garden tours, a Wine & Roses event in the summer and our Annual Holiday Open House in December.  While we anticipate our meetings with speakers to continue virtually, we hope to return to in person events in the near future.

We publish at least 7 issues of our e-newsletter, Skyscrapers & Roses, per year.

New members receive a FREE 4-Month Trial Membership to the American Rose Society! Joining or renewing is easy! Visit our "Storefront" page.

June Event! Friday June 2, 2023
Manhattan Rose Society Presents a Private Tour of the United Nations Rose Garden
Join us for a tour of the United Nations Gardens, including its garden of 1500 roses. This will be a private tour for Manhattan Rose Society members on June 2; we meet at 1:30 to check in for a 2:30 guided tour.  The tour is limited to 15 people.  To register: contact Pat Shanley, pshanley@aol.com  ASAP!

For those registered for the garden tour, we will meet for an optional lunch at The Ambassador Grill, One United Nations Plaza (inside the Millennium Hilton hotel (E. 44th between 2nd and 1staves).  Meet promptly at 11:30 a.m.  Cost of your lunch will be your responsibility, but the cost of the garden tour is your membership perk and covered by the Manhattan Rose Society.  Here’s a link to the restaurant:  https://www.ambassadorgrillnyc.com

If you are not attending the lunch, meet at 1:30 p.m. at the United Nations Visitor Center at 801 First Avenue (across the street from The UN).

The United Nations Rose Garden

The collection, which dates back to the time of construction of the UN Building in late 1940s, includes hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas and landscape shrub roses. There are beds of ‘Peace’ which is the rose that was given to each delegate at the first UN meeting.  We will stroll around the gardens with their exceptional rose collection and iconic cherry trees: learn about the story behind the “George and the Dragon” statue, see an actual segment of the Berlin Wall, and discover a “hidden gem” honoring one of the most important women in the history of the United Nations: Eleanor Roosevelt.

Registration is limited so we will take reservations from MRS members on a first-come first-served basis.  Send your request to attend, along with your email and phone number, to Pat Shanley (pshanley@aol.com).

Here are more details to know:
We will check in at 1:30 p.m. at the UN Visitor Center, 801 First Ave. (at 45thStreet).
You must bring a valid ID such as a driver’s license or passport to enter the United Nations Headquarters.  The document must be original (no photographs or photocopies accepted) and in Latin/Roman characters.
Full COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended for entry to the UN premises. Showing proof of vaccination is not required. Masks are recommended, but not required.
