June Event - Manhattan Rose Society proudly presents:
Dr. Baldo Villegas - Integrated Pest Management in the Rose Garden
Thursday, June 12, 2025, 7pm via Zoom
Integrated Pest Management or IPM for short is the integration of all pest control practices that least impact the environment and controls pests at acceptable levels. IPM requires knowledge of your plants and their potential pest problems and if possible choosing those plants that are known to be resistant to its major pests. IPM also requires constant monitoring or scouting for potential problems and to take appropriate action when a problem is first found.
Dr. Villegas will show how he uses IPM in his rose garden. He has been growing roses for about 45 years in the Sacramento area in northern California. He has been exhibiting roses at local and district rose shows for over 40 years. His present garden was planted in 2010-2011 and has over 2500 roses of all types.  He has not sprayed this garden with either insecticides or fungicides. Join us to learn how this can work for you in your garden.

BALDO VILLEGAS retired as a Senior Environmental Research Scientist (Entomologist) from the CA State Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) in 2011. He worked for the State Agriculture Department for over 34 years developing and implementing biological control programs against invasive insect and weed pests throughout California.

He is an avid gardener. His rose garden contains over 1200 roses of all types plus there is a rose holding area with about 1000 potted plants of all types. His garden also has over 50 fruit trees, 30 grapevines, 60+ blueberry plants, numerous blackberry plants and a large vegetable garden with many types of vegetables. The backyard features many perennial plants that were especially selected to attract birds, bees, beneficial insects, and butterflies.

Baldo is an Accredited Horticulture Judge (1987), Consulting Rosarian (1987) and Master Consulting Rosarian (2005) with the American Rose Society. From 1989-2003, he served as Northern California-Nevada-Hawaii (NCNH) District Chair of Consulting Rosarians. He also served a 3-year term as National Chair of the Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society.

He is an active member of the American Rose Society as well as his three local rose societies, Gold Country, Rhode Island, and New England Rose Societies. He is an Honorary Member of Mother Lode and the Connecticut Rose Societies and a Life Member of Sierra Foothills and Sacramento Rose Societies.

The Zoom link to this program will be sent to all members the week of the meeting.  You can join Manhattan Rose Society from the Storefront page of this website!
